Wadi Mejenin Dam – Jabal al Gharb

About 64 km south of Tripoli, in Libya’s northwest, lies Wadi Mejenin Dam, a massive 42-meter high embankment dam completed in 1972. Its main purposes are water supply for irrigation, flood control, and replenishing underground water aquifers. From the dam, during the rainy season, water safely flows all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, passing directly from the southern hills near Tripoli.

I went there for fishing with my Family and Friends. The place is amazing for fishing, with the water often full of fish during the season. You can catch a lot of carp and other species. In the dry season, however, the dam can almost dry out, and unfortunately, up to 95% of the fish can die due to low water levels.

One thing you need to know is that swimming is strictly forbidden at Wadi Mejenin Dam. The dam has a record of drownings, and the water can be extremely dangerous. During our visit, someone on our team, unaware of the rules, tried to swim. Security immediately came and took written statements from us. Since my brother and his colleague were with us, we didn’t face serious issues, but it was a clear reminder: never swim here. Legal action can be taken if anyone violates this rule.

The dam itself is impressive, built to withstand heavy rainfall and safely pass excess water to the sea. After the Derna dam failures in 2023, there have been growing concerns about the long-term safety and effectiveness of Libya’s dams, including Wadi Mejenin. Despite these concerns, the dam remains a crucial part of Libya’s water management system.

One of the best things about Wadi Mejenin Dam is the natural environment around it. Unlike Wadi Ghan, which is hilly and lacks large trees, Wadi Mejenin is surrounded by big Eucalyptus trees, offering shade and a perfect setting for camping. The area is calm, quiet, and ideal for a weekend trip. You can set up tents under the trees, fish during the day, and enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by nature.

Sunset at Wadi Mejenin is breathtaking. The golden light reflects on the water, the leaves of the trees rustle in the gentle breeze, and the hills in the background slowly turn orange and purple. It’s a perfect moment for photography or just sitting quietly, taking in the scenery.

Visiting Wadi Mejenin Dam is not just about fishing; it’s a mix of adventure, nature, and respect for the rules. Always carry food, water, and camping gear if you plan to stay. Remember, the water is not safe for swimming, and mud near the edges can be slippery.

This place is one of my favorite weekend getaways near Tripoli — a mix of history, utility, nature, and adventure. Fishing, camping under eucalyptus trees, and enjoying the sunset make it a completely different experience from places like Wadi Ghan.
